11 -- The Upper Room -- Part I

In this lecture, we enter one of the great turning points of Saint John’s Gospel. When the Greeks come seeking Jesus, the Lord announces that His Hour has come. The nations are arriving, but the way they will enter is not through admiration from a distance; it is through the grain of wheat that falls into the earth and dies.

From John 12:20 through 14:31, we watch the Church begin to take shape. Gentiles seek Jesus; many within Israel refuse the Light; Jesus washes the feet of His disciples; and Judas goes out into the night. Against this darkness, Christ gives the New Commandment: “Love one another; even as I have loved you.”
This commandment becomes the covenantal law of the Church. Christ Himself is the Way to the Father, and the Father sends the Holy Spirit to dwell with the Church forever. The passage moves from the nations at the door to the Father’s house opened, from betrayal and night to divine indwelling, and from the foot washing to the love by which earth is joined to heaven.
