In Lecture 6 of the Gospel of Saint John, we enter John 5 and the healing of the paralytic at the pool of Bethesda. This talk explores far more than a miracle story: it examines how Jesus publicly breaks the Sabbath, confronts the old covenant order, and reveals Himself as the true source of life, mercy, and healing. Along the way, we consider the meaning of the pool, the symbolism of the five porticoes and the thirty-eight years, the deeper reasons for the opposition of “the Jews,” and the spiritual paralysis that keeps us from rising when Christ commands us to walk. This lecture is both biblical and deeply practical, pressing us to ask: where in our own lives are we still lying by the pool, waiting for change instead of answering the Lord?
